Hectic Weekend
So here I am...sulking because it's Sunday night and it's back to work tomorrow. Bah. Anyway, I can't complain because it was quite a good weekend.Friday: I QUIT my job
Yes. I resigned. EllisDon was a great place. They did a lot for me. I mean...come on...who would keep a job waiting for you , let you go to Australia and let you start three months later? EllisDon. But...it wasn't enough for me. I needed a challenge. It wasn't the right place...especially for marketing.
Anyway, I've been interviewing at Canon for the past three months. It was really random that they called me in for some Product Marketing coordinator position in July, and then I didn't end up getting it. But as the HR consultant I was speaking to said, "the position was very research oriented and it wasn't a good fit for your skills." So she ended up telling me that there was another...better position that they are keeping me in mind for. Fast forward to September. I get called in for another interview for: Channel Marketing Specialist. Basically the guy that was currently in this position was getting promoted in October and they had me in mind to take over. Lucky for me, they didn't post this position. It was company policy that they post it internally at Canon for 5 days and then they would move forward.
Fast forward a few weeks later and I get my offer letter. It's a wicked position. My new boss Dave seems like a pretty cool guy. It's definitely a much challenging position, but I'm really excited about learning a hell of a lot.
On the creative end I'll be coordinating the ISG advertising and looking after the corporate website. I'll also be the in-house creative designer for Canon branded marketing collateral, print ads, flyers etc...
On the Channel/distribution end I'll be developing strategies to increase awareness in the SMB market. Develop relations with our channel partners, develop marketing plans and annually present a year in review to Canon Japan. I mean...this is really just brief summary of a some of my responsibilities, but now that I've got my foot in the door, I have a lot of opportunities to move around and work my way up.
I gave in my 2-weeks notice and luckily for me, accumulated vacation days, so I officially have my last day at ED a week tomorrow. Giving in my resignation was VERY stressful. No joke, it made me sick all of Friday until I broke the news to my boss, VP and HR. I almost gagged just thinking of what to say.
Breaking the news to Donna was hilarious. Here's a summary:
Nina: "Donna, can I speak to you for a couple of minutes?" (shuts office door)
Donna smirks and looks at me suspiciously.
Donna: "OMG! You're leaving aren't you!?"
Nina: "Wait! no. Let me explain. But...yes."
Donna: (Gives me hug) "OMG! Congratulations! Where!!?"
Nina: "No!..wait..yes. Canon. Let me explain.
Donna: (Who is also a photographer on the side) "Canon?! You Bitch!" (Yes, my boss called me a bitch).
Nina: "Hahahaha"
Donna:"That is awesome! I'm so happy for you!"
Anyway, she goes on to tell me that this is a great decision and that they will be able to offer me a lot more. "In fact...I knew you wouldn't last here that long," she said. "You have so much more to offer and ED is not going to be able to do much for you. Sometimes you just have to do what is best for you." So that went well. Until I had to meet with Michael, my VP and owner of the company. Shit. It was the most uncomfortable 15 minutes of my life. It was a mix of emotions. Almost like someone breaking up with me and ripping my heart open. That is how bad I felt when I broke the news to him and saw his smile (he was having a great day) turn into this miserable disappointed look at me. "TGIF!" I thought. It's 4:30pm and I'm getting the hell out of here. He should be better by Monday. Lets see tomorrow.
But, by the end of it, Michael said, "I wondered if this would have been a good fit for you. Construction Management isn't all that exciting..." At least he understood I was doing this for my career. I made him understand it had nothing to do with the company and I was willing to help them out in anyway until the found a replacement for me.
To end the day, I vented out by screaming my lungs out on hours of rollercoaster riding at Wonderland. Igor, Diana, Ivan and myself grabbed some Paninis and headed over to FEARFEST @ Wonderland. FearFest sort of sucked, but I was pretty impressed by the look of Wonderland. I enjoyed roaming the dark, fog covered amusement park bustling with howls and shrill screams. And to top it off, no line-ups on the rides. It was great!
Saturday: CCIT Alumni Re-Connect Night

Sat night was FANTASTIC. I got to meet up with my CCIT Alumni buddies. It was so great to see everyone doing so well and catching up on old times, and current happenings. The event was held at D’Martinis in Mississauga. I hope we have more of these soon. I heart CCIT…class of 05/06. They rock!

Sunday: Just Chillax and watch a little Greys
I woke up pretty late. In fact…Igor woke me up…which is very rare. We were going to make a trek up to the Badlands for a little photo date, but I peeked out my window and scorned at the grey clouds and my wet driveway. Date re-scheduled. So I made my way to his place and instead we stayed in and caught up on two episodes of Greys. Oh I love that show! Ate a little Chinese and made my way home.
Cheers to another weekend.
